Friday Morning 89: Intrapreneur & Entrepreneur

Tubudd
In the latest installment of Tubudd's Friday Morning series, we were honored to host Ms. Hoang Ngoc Anh, Chief Growth Officer of Renaissanc.IO, as our guest speaker. The focus of the session was on the compelling and ever-relevant topic of "Intrapreneur & Entrepreneur."

As a seasoned businesswoman, Ms. Ngoc Anh has experienced different models of businesses and investment types. Ms. Hoang Ngoc Anh began by defining the key roles and characteristics of both entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. Entrepreneurs, she explained, are the individuals who create and operate new business ventures, taking on substantial risks in hopes of achieving significant rewards. They innovate, identify market opportunities, secure financing, and build and lead teams. The entrepreneurial journey is marked by full control over business decisions, the potential for substantial financial rewards, and the freedom to innovate without corporate constraints. However, it comes with high financial and personal risks, challenges in securing resources, and potential isolation, especially in the early stages of the venture.

In contrast, intrapreneurs operate within existing organizations. They are tasked with developing innovative ideas or projects but within the confines of a larger company. These employees act like entrepreneurs but leverage the company's resources, capabilities, and market position. Intrapreneurs benefit from the support and infrastructure of their parent companies, face reduced personal and financial risks, and have access to a robust support network, including mentorship and guidance. However, their initiatives must align with the company’s strategic goals, and they may encounter bureaucratic hurdles. The financial rewards for intrapreneurs are generally less substantial compared to successful entrepreneurs, and their success can be influenced by the overall health and direction of the parent company.

Ms. Hoang Ngoc Anh highlighted the key differences between entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, focusing on risk, resources, autonomy, and rewards. Entrepreneurs bear significant financial and personal risks, must secure their own resources, and enjoy full autonomy over business decisions. They also have the potential for significant financial gains if successful. In contrast, intrapreneurs operate within a strategic framework, have access to company resources, face lower personal risks, and receive recognition and potential bonuses but not the full financial rewards that come with owning a business.

The session concluded with a lively Q&A where Ms. Hoang Ngoc Anh provided practical advice for aspiring entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs alike. She emphasized that both paths play critical roles in driving innovation and growth. The choice between becoming an entrepreneur or an intrapreneur ultimately depends on an individual's risk tolerance, resource availability, and personal goals.

This insightful session provided a comprehensive understanding of the entrepreneur versus an intrapreneur and encourage intrapreneurship among company members. Tubudd extends its gratitude to Ms. Hoang Ngoc Anh for her valuable insights and all attendees' participation.
