Common scams in Vietnam: How to avoid

Son Nguyen Minh
When exploring the vibrant and culturally rich country of Vietnam, it's important to be aware of some common scams that can occasionally occur. While the majority of locals are welcoming and honest, it's always good to exercise caution and be prepared. In this blog post, we'll shed light on some of the most common scams in Vietnam. By arming yourself with knowledge, you can enjoy a safe and hassle-free journey through this captivating Southeast Asian destination.

1. Change Scams

One of the most prevalent scams in Vietnam involves manipulation with currency. Some vendors or taxi drivers may try to shortchange you or give you counterfeit bills. Polymer banknotes are usually mistaken because of similar color of the 20,000 VND note and 500,000 note. In addition, polymer banknotes are quite sticky and you might double pay the actual price of the item or the service.

To avoid falling victim to this scam, it's recommended to familiarize yourself with the local currency, check your change carefully, and use smaller bills whenever possible. Always take a moment to count the change (even if some scammers will make you feel hurry to confuse you) and verify that it matches the correct amount.

2. Fake Taxis and Motorbike Taxis

In busy tourist areas, fake taxis and motorbike taxis can be a concern. These unauthorized operators may charge exorbitant fares, take unnecessarily long routes, or even engage in more serious scams. Remember to confirm that the meter is running or negotiate the fare before starting your journey. Always opt for reputable taxi companies with official logos and meters, or consider using reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab, Gojek or Be.

Some reliable taxi companies in Vietnam include Mai Linh Taxi (hotline 1055), Taxi Group (hotline (024) 38 53 53 53) and Vinasun Taxi (hotline 028 38 27 27 27). All these 3 companies also have mobile app for their services.

3. Counterfeit Businesses, Products and Restaurants

Be cautious when purchasing high-value items, such as electronics, luxury goods, or branded items from street vendors or unknown shops. Some establishments may sell counterfeit products at seemingly attractive prices. To ensure authenticity, shop at reputable stores or authorized dealers, and verify the product's legitimacy before making a purchase. Moreover, Vietnam is very well known for handicraft products, but you need to be careful when choosing the place to buy them. There are many shops that sell fake and cheap items from China and pretend that they are handmade items from Vietnamese locals.

While Vietnam is known for its vibrant street food scene, it's important to exercise caution when choosing where to dine. Some establishments may claim to serve authentic local cuisine or advertise famous dishes, but in reality, they may serve subpar or even counterfeit food. When it comes to dining in restaurants, choose reputable establishments that have positive reviews or recommendations. Look for restaurants with a steady flow of customers, as this is often a sign of good quality and popularity. Additionally, make use of online platforms and food review websites to gather information and feedback about the restaurant before making a reservation. Recently, lots of restaurants in Vietnam have been recommended to recognize with a Michelin star. However, as locals, we know that not all the recommended restaurants are great, you need to refer to locals' opinions to choose where to eat carefully.

4. Pushy Sellers

Vietnam's vibrant markets and street vendors are part of the country's charm, but be aware of pushy sellers who may employ aggressive tactics to make a sale. Don't feel obligated to purchase something if you're not interested, and politely decline if you're not comfortable. Maintain a firm but respectful stance to deter persistent sellers.

5. Overcharging and Bargaining

In some tourist areas, prices may be inflated for unsuspecting visitors. It's common practice to negotiate and bargain for goods and services in Vietnam, especially in markets. Brush up on your bargaining skills and don't hesitate to negotiate for a fair price. However, always maintain a respectful attitude and research the approximate prices of goods or services beforehand to have a reference point. Try the tip of walking away when you don't agree with the price, that's what the locals always do when bargaining.

6. Pickpocketing in Crowded Places

As with any crowded tourist destination, pickpocketing can be a concern. Keep your belongings secure at all times and be mindful of your surroundings. Consider using a cross-body bag or a money belt to hold your valuables, and avoid displaying expensive items openly.

7. Local Buddy can help you avoid scams
